Vedic means pertaining to Veda, and therefore Vedic Knowledge is knowledge of Veda. To understand the meaning of Veda we must look to the sciences, both ancient and modern. Modern science has identified the most fundamental level of Natures functioning as a unified field of all the Laws of Nature, a unified source of our vast, material universe, from which all force and matter fields sequentially emerge. Einsteins desire to create a workable unified field theory to unite the known force fields has thus been virtually realized in the form of unified quantum field theories. This discovery is expressed in the mathematical language of Physics by the Lagrangian of Superstring Theory, which presents the detailed structure and self-interacting dynamics of the Unified Field in its most compact form. While modern science has glimpsed the Unified Field and expressed it through mathematical formulae, the ancient Rishis, or Seers, of the Vedic tradition of knowledge directly experienced the Unified Field as an infinite, eternal field of pure intelligence, pure consciousnessan ocean of pure wakefulness responsible for creating and maintaining the infinitely diverse universe. These Rishis located the Unified Field as the simplest form of their awareness, and explored it as their own inner wakefulness, their own Self. In the Vedic Tradition, this field is known as Atma.
In his first book, entitled Science of Being and Art of Living: Transcendental Meditation (written in 1963), His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi described the Unified Field of Pure Consciousness as 'Being', the basis of creation underlying all forms and phenomena in Nature:
This field of pure consciousness is therefore that one element in Nature on the ground of which the infinite variety of creation is continuously emerging, growing, and dissolving. The whole field of change emerges from this field of non-change, from this self-referral, immortal state of consciousness. Long ago in Vedic Times, the knowledge and experience of pure consciousness was available to everyone both in theory and in practice, but through the long passage of time it became obscured and lost to view. Because it is the basic reality of life and the inner Self of everyone, however, it can never be truly lost, and thus many individuals with highly refined nervous systems have glimpsed this supreme reality of life from time to time, and recorded their experiences in the poetry, philosophies, and religious writings of cultures from every part of the world. Without a systematic technology, however, the experience of pure consciousness remained rare, and thus has been considered mystical and metaphysical, and the subject of philosophical speculation rather than the object of scientific enquiry. In this age, Maharishi has brought to light the eternal Vedic Wisdom, and with it he has formulated a complete science of consciousness. This science of life provides the intellectual understanding of the nature, range, and application of the Unified Field of Pure Consciousness, and includes the Vedic Technologies for directly experiencing it and unfolding it fully in human awareness. Maharishis Vedic Science has thus opened the door to perfection for every man by making available an ideal life in bliss, perfectly in accord with Natural Law. Vedathe Structuring Dynamics of Self-Referral Consciousness Pure consciousness, self-referral consciousness, is Unity, the totality of all that is. It is eternally self-sufficient, for there is nothing outside it, nothing other than itself with which to interact. Therefore, it is the self-interacting dynamics of this field that is responsible for the innumerable varieties of life in the world, the innumerable streams of intelligence in creation. Since pure intelligence, fully awake self-referral consciousness, is the most fundamental level of Natures functioning, inherent within its silent nature is infinite organizing poweras well as being infinitely silent, it is infinitely dynamic. In the process of unfolding the universe, self-referral consciousness moves within itself, it interacts with itself, giving rise to a sequential flow of sound within its own nature. This sound is a hum, the infinite frequency vibration of pure consciousness knowing itself, which expresses the dynamics of transformation of self-referral consciousness into the diversified structures of Natural Law. It is a transcendental sound, for it is only available on the level of self-referral consciousness itself. This sequential flow of sound within self-referral consciousness is Veda. Veda is the vibrancy of intelligence in the form of sound generated by the self-referral dynamics of consciousnessthose specific sounds that construct self-referral consciousness. The different values of sound contained within Veda are its structuring dynamics, which are the Vedic Literature. Thus it is clear that Veda and the Vedic Literature is not a collection of books, nor the philosophies of ancient India; rather Veda and the Vedic Literature are the sounds of self-referral consciousness moving within itselfthe whisper of the Self to itself. These sounds have been recorded in the Vedic Texts, which have been kept available since time immemorial in the oral tradition of the Vedic Pandits of India, but it is important to remember always that Veda is structured in consciousness. Through proper use of the sounds of Veda and the Vedic Literature, the entire Vedic Technologythe whole engineering of creation, all the secrets of Natures silent functioningis available to us. Vedic Knowledge, therefore, is knowledge of Veda, and in its most profound sense this is the intimate knowledge of Veda and the Vedic Literature as reverberations of ones own Self. In this total awakening to ones own inner nature is the full blossoming of human life, beautifully expressed in the Upanishads by the expressions Aham Brahmasmi, I am Totality, and Sarvam khalu idam Brahm, All of this indeed is Totality. This is Total Knowledge, including knowledge of Unity, knowledge of diversity, and complete knowledge of Unity becoming diversity. Vedic Knowledge also refers to the complete intellectual understanding of pure intelligence as well as the practical technologies that enable anyone to unfold Veda within himself. Among these technologies, the Transcendental Meditation Programme provides the means for anyone to easily and effortlessly experience Veda within his own Self; the TM-Sidhi Programme trains an individual to function on the level of pure consciousness, the total potential of Natural Law, so that he can quickly rise to higher states of consciousness and life in accord with Natural Law; Maharishis Vedic Approach to Health provides a system of natural medicine, based on the principles found within Veda itself, for creating a perfect physiology, capable of upholding perfection on every level of life; Maharishi Sthapatya Veda encompasses the principles of building homes, offices, and communities in accord with Natural Law, so that life can naturally be lived without the violation of any Law of Nature; Maharishi Gandharva Veda music provides the melodies of Natures own functioning, to bring the mind, body, and environment into perfect accord with Natural Law. Veda and the Vedic Literature in Human Physiology
This momentous discovery has deeply significant implications for human life, for it provides the technology for quickly bringing perfection to every individual and to every nation. According to Professor Nader, reading the sounds of the Vedic Literature in their proper sequenceeven phonetically, without any sense of meaningcreates resonance with the same anatomic structures to which the different branches of the Vedic Literature correspond, enlivening a specific sequence of neuronal and physiological activity. By re-establishing the proper sequence of the unfoldment of Natural Law in the physiology, any imperfectionsstress, blocks, or any structural or functional abnormalitiescan be eliminated. In addition, reading the Vedic Literature in proper sequence has the effect of regulating and balancing the functioning of the brain physiology; during reading, the functioning of individual fibres of the brain come into coherence with the holistic value of brain functioning, and as a result the mind begins to function according to Natural Law in every expression. When the mind flows in an evolutionary direction, all thoughts, speech, and action also flow in an evolutionary direction, in the direction of the unfoldment of higher states of consciousness. The result is that the physiology functions increasingly in accord with its original and perfect design. Every
individual is capable of experiencing Veda in their simplest state of
awareness. Complete knowledge and understanding of Veda does not come
through intellectual analysis, but from identifying ones awareness
with Vedathe self-interacting dynamics of pure, self-referral
consciousnessand exploring it on its own level. Since Veda is
a phenomenon of pure subjectivity, transcendental to the thinking processes,
the intellect is incapable of comprehending it on its own level. In
the following quote, Maharishi gives the most profound understanding
of Vedic Study:
This provides a commentary on the following expressions from the Upanishads, which underscore the relationship between identifying ones awareness with Veda and knowing Veda:
This quote presents Maharishis ideal of Vedic Study, which promises to develop complete knowledge in the awareness of every student. Vedic Study is not the intellectual analysis of ancient books, but rather the exploration of Veda and the Vedic Literature on its own level, enlivening the fundamental impulses of Natural Law permanently in the students awareness. Reading the Vedic Literature in conjunction with the practice of Transcendental Meditation provides the basis of Vedic Education, for it enlivens the total potential of Natural Law in the awareness of every student. This is the supreme achievement of education, which can create a perfect individual and a perfect educational system. Everything Should Be Vedic Since everything throughout the universe is the expression of Vedasince everything is the expression of Natural Lawthen everything should be Vedic. That means that every aspect of lifeincluding the food we eat, the buildings that we live and work in, and the activities that we perform throughout our livesshould be Vedic. When life is founded on Vedic Principles, its every aspect will be supported by the infinite organizing power of Natural Law. The different disciplines of Vedic Knowledge that are presented in this site, therefore, offer the means to unfold perfection in lifelife free from problems, mistakes, or actions that violate Natural Law. The books by Maharishi that are listed on these pages provide a profound understanding of Vedic Knowledge and its application to different fields of life, and the books by other authors demonstrate how this profound wisdom can be applied to different areas of life. This is the knowledge that will bring fulfilment to every individual and to every community, and will provide the means to unfold Heaven on Earth.
